Softball Loses Tough Battle in 2nd Round
The Turpin Fastpitch Softball season came to an end Thursday, May 13th after a hard fought battle with #5 seed Milford. The Spartans entered the postseason as the #11 seed. After posting an exciting win against Seton HS in round one of the sectional playoffs on Monday, the Spartans set their sights on Milford HS, a team that had beaten them in the regular season 5-1. In that first round game against Seton, the Spartans battled back from a 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 on a clutch, two out double by junior Paige Lindsey in the bottom of the 5th inning. Senior pitcher Natalie Persicano held off Seton for the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
Originally scheduled for Wednesday, rain forced the 2nd round game against Milford to be played on Thursday. The venue was also moved to Turpin since our field was in better playing condition, even though Milford was the home team based on their higher seed. The game turned into a pitcher's duel, with Milford's Sarah Alley keeping the Spartans off the basepaths for most of the game. Turpin pitcher Natalie Persicano kept the Milford batters off balance through most of the game giving up 5 scattered hits. Entering the 6th inning the Spartans trailed 1-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, junior Paige Lindsey found herself again in the hotseat. With two strikes on her she roped a line drive to left field. They say games turn on a single play, and this one couldn't be more true. Playing in shallow left field, the left fielder made a spectacular diving catch to rob Lindsey of a potential game winning hit. In the bottom of the 6th, Milford drove one out of the park for a 2 run home run to secure the victory 3-0.
Congratulations to the Spartans on a successful season. While the record may not be what they had wanted, the players showed poise against some very tough opponents. The Spartans lose 5 very talented young ladies to graduation but with solid returning underclassmen and very promising reserve players that will move up next year, the future of the Spartans coudn't be brighter!
