Boys Basketball Beats Rival Anderson

Posted on: February 3, 2020
Jackson Holt dominated with 24 points while Owen Spencer put up a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Turpin Spartans rolled the Anderson Redskins 59-35 Friday night at Anderson High School.  In front of a gym filled to capacity with rival fans, Turpin (9-1 ECC, 14-2 overall) shrugged off recent offensive struggles to send their 5 seniors off with a victory in their final road game against Anderson.

Holt and the Spartans started hot right out of the gate.  The junior guard made the first basket of the game to put Turpin up 2-0.  Anderson countered by scoring on their first 2 possessions to take their only lead of the game, 5-2 early.  The Redskin faithful were pumped up with the noise level inside Anderson High School reaching ear-splitting decibel levels.  But, Theisen Lee completed the ‘and 1’ three point play to tie the game at 5 and ignite a 12-0 Turpin run to close the 1st quarter with a 17-5 lead.  Holt had a pair of 3 pt field goals during the run, Dom Cantrella had a basket and Spencer scored his first bucket as well.

Anderson tried to get back in the game, starting the second quarter off hitting a pair of free throws, but the Redskins had a difficult shooting night, hitting on less than 30% of the shots from the field and 67% of their free throws.  Following a Spartan turnover, Spencer went up high for a monster block on the Anderson fast break and the Turpin defense held stout.  Holt continued to pour in the points during the quarter, hitting from all over the court.  Junior Ethan Zinn connected from the floor following a pair of missed free throws, then junior Matt Sheffer hit a 3 from the corner to put Turpin up 16 at 26-10.  Holt another 3 and Spencer closed the quarter connecting on a free throw to give Turpin the 30-13 halftime advantage.

The second half played out much like the first as the athleticism of the Turpin squad overwhelmed the Redskins.  Senior Harry Tyszkiewicz added a deep 3 ball and a mid-range jumper on consecutive possessions.  Not to be outdone, the big fella Spencer showed range that has Citadel coaches smiling, knocking down a 3 of his own.  Senior Josh Bell converted a pair of free throws and senior Quincy Mussio muscled up a hoop from the low post to round our the 3rd period 49-23 in Turpin’s favor.

In the 4th quarter Holt and Spencer continued to pour in buckets, with junior guard Jaiden Alcalde and Mussio also getting in on the action.  Anderson mounted a brief comeback with a 10-0 run midway through the fourth, but the Spartan defense was more than up to the task.  Final score in this one: Turpin 59 - Anderson 35.  Next up the Spartans have a long week off before returning to the court Friday January 31st and Saturday February 1st for back to back home games against Loveland and McNick.
