Boys Soccer Beats McNick!

Turpin Varsity Soccer Tops Cross-Township Rival McNicholas With 2-0 Win

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer team got their season first win of the season on Saturday, August 28, going on the road to defeat Anderson Township rival McNicholas 2-0 on a steamy Saturday afternoon.

Turpin dominated possession throughout the first half, creating several chances at the McNicholas goal.  Eventually the Spartan pressure paid dividends. Hard-working sophomore forward Kyle Suter forced the action on the McNicholas back line, dribbling through and around defenders and launching a shot that was saved by the McNick keeper, but sophomore forward Shane Barrett was well-positioned for the rebound, booting it home for a 1-0 Spartan lead. The Spartans kept up the pressure, but did not cash in again, resulting in a 1-0 lead at half.

The second half was slightly more balanced in possession. McNicholas thought it had leveled the score, but their potential game-tying goal was called back for offsides.  After that, the Spartans’ pressure game took hold again, and sophomore forward Hayden Jump managed to break behind the Spartan defense and lob a clever ball over the onrushing McNicholas keeper and into the goal for a 2-0 lead with about 20 minutes to go. Thanks to a hard-working defensive back line, hard work from starters and substitutes alike on a very hot day, and several clutch saves by senior keeper Max Kovall, Turpin kept its second consecutive clean sheet and closed out a 2-0 victory.

Turpin’s next game is Thursday, September 2 on the road against ECC rival Loveland at 7 p.m.
