Turpin Soccer Beats Rival Anderson 1-0, Freshman Lent Scores the Winner

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer team defeated rival Anderson 1-0 on Thursday, September 10, thanks to a late goal by freshman Brady Lent and clutch goalkeeping by junior Max Kovall.

Both teams started with the intensity expected in a rivalry game. Anderson applied heavy pressure for the first 20 minutes, but thanks to a couple of terrific sprawling saves by Kovall, Turpin was able to keep the game scoreless. Turpin had a great chance of its own midway through the first half, with junior forward Nathan Hart heading just over the goal off a feed from senior Jack Cnota. A physical first half ended 0-0.

The second half began as the first had ended, with even play offering chances for both teams, and Kovall making more good saves to keep the game scoreless. Finally, with 12 minutes remaining, Turpin struck. Turpin was awarded a free kick just outside the box. Senior Johannes Schwarz rifled the ball over the Anderson wall and off the crossbar. But Lent reacted quickly and was first to the rebound, slotting it home perfectly for a 1-0 lead.  Turpin had a chance to double their lead a short time later, but freshman Kyle Suter’s well-taken shot was turned away by a leaping save from Anderson goalie Ryan Sullivan. Desperate to level the score, Anderson poured on the pressure, but the Turpin defense withstood the attack and held on for a 1-0 victory.

With the victory, Turpin moves to 3-1 on the season. Turpin also completed a 2020 “Township Sweep,” having defeated McNicholas earlier this season.
