Turpin Soccer Loses to Mariemont 1-0

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer team suffered a hard-fought defeat in the heat at Mariemont on the afternoon of September 12, losing by a score of 1-0.

Mariemont was ranked No. 1 in the state in the initial Division III coaches poll, and early on in the match it was evident why. Mariemont applied strong pressure on the Turpin goal throughout the first half, but the Turpin defense held steady to keep the score 0-0 at halftime.

The Spartans opened the second half strongly, and as play progressed, possession was even and the teams exchanged opportunities to score. Six minutes into the second half, Mariemont senior defender Kyle Romick headed in a Warrior corner kick to open the scoring and give Mariemont a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Turpin had its best chance of the game, with senior Andrew Prewitt sprinting past Mariemont’s back line and firing a well-struck shot on target. But Mariemont keeper Max Miller sprawled across the face of goal to make a tremendous save, preserving the Warrior lead. While Turpin continued to attack the Mariemont goal, the Spartans were unable to push one through, and the game ended with a 1-0 Mariemont victory.

Turpin moves to 3-2 on the season. The Spartans’ next game is at home against Lebanon on Thursday, September 17.
