Boys Varsity Earns Comeback 3-2 Win Against Colerain

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer team hosted Colerain for a non-conference match on Tuesday, October 13, coming back from a first-half deficit with three second-half goals to win 3-2.

The Spartans got off to an inauspicious start, with a turnover in the back leading to a Colerain goal just 12 seconds into the game and a quick 1-0 deficit. The Spartans eventually recovered to find their footing, and by midway through the first half were exerting stiff pressure on the Colerain defense.  The Spartans ended the first half on the front foot, with seniors Johannes Schwarz and Jack Cnota both putting good shots on goal that narrowly missed, but they remained down 1-0 at half.

In the second half, it was the Spartans’ turn to start fast. One minute after the break, sophomore Carter Flora lobbed a beautiful cross into the box, and Cnota rose high above the defense to head it into the goal and level the score at 1-1.  Just minutes later, senior T.J. Crouse sent a high, long crossing shot from right of the Colerain box to the back post, where senior Danny Mangan was positioned and waiting.  Despite a difficult angle, Mangan lunged forward and headed the ball into the net to give the Spartans the 2-1 lead. A couple of terrific saves by the Colerain keeper kept the score 2-1 for a time, one with 17 minutes left on a rifled Crouse shot and another with 12 minutes left on a Cnota free kick.  But the Spartans finally tallied again on a great team goal, with Crouse threading a great ball to Flora down the left, who delivered a spot-on assist to the onrushing Cnota for his second goal of the night and a 3-1 Spartan advantage.  From there, it was nail-biting time, as Colerain got one back with four minutes to go off of a throw-in and hit a potential equalizer off the left post with under a minute to go.  But in the end, Turpin protected their 3-2 lead and came away with an exciting win.

Turpin moves to 9-3-2 on the season. The Spartans host West Clermont for their last regular season tilt on Thursday, October 15.
