Boys Varsity Falls 2-0 at Oak Hills

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer team traveled to play a non-conference game against Oak Hills on Saturday, September 26. Despite a strong effort, the Spartans lost an intense, physical affair 2-0.

Turpin started strong, dominating possession through the midfield and generating early chances. The Spartans’ best early opportunity came eight minutes in, when senior Jacob Towne sent a splendid cross into the box, which senior Johannes Schwarz headed just over. But the Highlanders soon found their footing, and with 20 minutes left, Oak Hills found the goal.  It came from a long throw-in into the box from right of the goal, and after a scrum, Oak Hills sophomore Will Sweet booted it into the goal. The Oak Hills pressure continued, and only a timely clearance off the line by senior defender Zander Pimenidis with five minutes remaining kept the score 1-0 at half.

The game remained physical, with both teams suffering injuries and receiving yellow cards. With 23 minutes to go, senior T.J. Crouse sent a left-footed shot just wide, and it appeared the Spartans were on the verge of leveling the game.  But with just under seven minutes left, Oak Hills scored a well-taken header to make the lead 2-0.  The Spartans turned up the pressure, and it took a sprawling save by the Highlanders’ keeper to turn away a well-struck shot by senior Jack Cnota.  With two minutes to go, the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick, but as if to prove that it was not their night, the shot was sent over, and the game ended 2-0.

Turpin moves to 5-3 on the season. The Spartans return to league play in their next game at Milford on Tuesday, September 29.
