Boys Varsity Wins Third in a Row, Defeating Walnut Hills 1-0

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer squad traveled to undefeated and league-leading Walnut Hills for an ECC showdown on Monday, October 5, and came away with a 1-0 victory that put the Spartans in first place in the ECC.

The weather was chilly for this one, but the teams got off to a hot start, sharing stretches of possession and exchanging scoring chances early in the game.  The Spartans’ pressure finally enabled them to break through with 15 minutes to go in the first half. The Walnut Hills keeper misplayed a ball sent high into the air near the goal, letting it slip out of his hands. It came to the feet of senior defender Danny Mangan, who was in the right place at the right time.  With the ball unexpectedly at his feet, Mangan kept his composure, quickly got control of the ball and slid it into the Eagles’ net. The first half ended with the Spartans maintaining their 1-0 advantage.

Turpin nearly doubled their lead just two minutes into the second half, when senior Jack Cnota headed a corner kick just over the net. As the match progressed Walnut Hills began to get more opportunities near the Turpin goal, but once again the Turpin defense and junior Spartans goalkeeper Max Kovall came up big.  Kovall had 16 saves on the night, none bigger than his tremendous one-on-one save on Walnut Hills star Charlie Hamann’s shot from close range with just four minutes left to keep the score 1-0.  The Spartans saw out the rest of the game, preserving their third win in five days, sixth consecutive win in the conference and sixth shutout of the season.

Turpin moves to 8-3 on the season, and at 6-1 in the ECC, the Spartans are in first place in a competitive conference race, with three other one-loss teams having additional games to play. The Spartans next travel to play high-scoring league foe Kings on Thursday, October 8.
