Freshmen Grind Out Hard-Fought Win on the Road

Posted on: October 29, 2019

The Spartan freshmen traveled to Hamilton High School for a special Thursday night game…and traveled home with a hard-fought win moving them up to 5-3 on the season.

The contest began with Hamilton on offense, but it was short-lived.  A stout Turpin defensive line and a sack by Cody Hurst forced a quick three and out by the Bulldogs.  Turpin got the ball back but faced the same fate and was forced to punt it back.  The remainder of the first quarter was played between the 30’s with both teams unable to move the ball offensively.  In the second quarter Turpin found it’s mojo, Clark Helgason and Reed Rosebraugh established a strong running game, including several first downs.  Clark then went to the air finding Charlie Feltman for a Turpin first down in the red zone.  Again, Clark dropped back to pass; this time finding Connor Frantz in the endzone for Turpin’s first touchdown of the night.  The Spartans couldn’t convert their two point attempt though, keeping their lead at 6-0.  For most of the rest of the second quarter the slug fest continued with neither team being able to get their offense going.

It was a back and forth punt fest until the waning seconds before halftime.  It was then that Hamilton’s QB found an open receiver taking them down to Turpin 15 yard line setting up a QB sneak for the Bulldog’s first score of the night.  Like Turpin’s attempt, their two point conversion fell flat, keeping the score at 6-6 and taking the teams to the locker rooms to figure out how to get the ball moving the in second half.

Turpin started the second half with the ball and made good halftime adjustments.  Clark connected with George Machenheimer for a huge first down (plus a 15 yard face mask penalty) taking them into the Hamilton red zone for a second time.  With his throwing arm delivering results, Clark threw a dart to Cody Hurst who snuck inside the pylon moving Turpin ahead 12-6.  Reed Rosebraugh followed with a successful two point conversion (14-6) extending Turpin’s lead to 8.  The Spartan’s continued to apply the pressure to Hamilton’s offense.  Reed Rosebraugh stepped up again; this time on defensive with a big stop on Hamilton’s fake punt.  This forced a turnover on downs giving the Spartan’s the ball on Hamilton’s 30.  But alas, the Bulldog’s defense did its job and the ground game slug-fest continued with a Turpin turn over on downs.  Early in the fourth quarter, Hamilton found a hole and the quarterback found a target who went 50 yards for a Bulldog touchdown.  Their conversion failed though keeping Turpin ahead 14-12.

As the game clock wound down, Clark did a great job managing the clock and squeezing out every available second while still moving the ball.  He connected with Reed Rosebraugh, Charlie Feltman and George Machenheimer for back to back to back first downs taking the Spartans down to the Hamilton five yard line.  Hoping to add points before the clock expired, Clark went for the QB sneak but lost his helmet forcing him out of the game for a play.  Reed Rosebraugh stepped in and took the direct snap but Turpin was called for holding keeping the Spartans out of the endzone and ending the game.  Congratulations to the freshmen Spartans for grinding out another big win!
