Girls Golf Outlasts Loveland, Finishes 3rd in ECC

Posted on: September 26, 2019

The Lady Spartans ground through their rescheduled match against the Loveland Tigers, Tuesday, and emerged the victor by 11 strokes. A few dozen shots missed the mark for the Spartans resulting in the highest team score of the season - Turpin 197, Loveland 208. Head Coach JK Buck lauded Turpin’s beloved seniors, Elizabeth Chamberlin and Skylar Huster, ahead of their final ECC match. To celebrate, the Loveland seniors coped with the two orange helium balloons that were attached to their walking carts.  Simply put, it seemed a tough day all around at this hilly, perplexing Hickory Woods course. The recently aerated and tightly trimmed greens introduced a level of uncertainty for even the closest of putts. However, that paled in comparison to several extremely tricky greens where just a digit of strength in a 3 foot putt could trickle your ball past the hole, only to pick up speed and roll off the green, 60 feet away, into the taller grass.

The difficulty in the course is reflected in the individual scoring as Alyssa Haverstraw and Elizabeth Chamberlain shot 47 & 48 respectively, followed by Margot Swartz and Abby Montague with twin 51s, Skylar Huster 52, and Bridget Trout finished with 59. Nevertheless, the Lady Spartans struggled through, and effort secured an important final ECC win. The team finished 3rd in the ECC standings with a 4-2 record. Varsity stands at 16-6 in all competitions, with the local “Queen of the Hill” High School challenge just two days away.

Women’s JV Golf Posts Win against Loveland

The Lady Spartans JV drew on their mental endurance to navigate the course today. They pressed the Loveland Tiger JV team throughout the match, eventually posting a 214-247 victory. Sophia Calvert led the scoring with a 52, followed by a three-way tie by Ruby Whiteford, Cece Chavez and Emory Heming with 54. Lexi Elza shot a 55. Caroline Theetge also contended with JV today. Nice to get a win to finish the 2019 season.
