The Turpin JV Girls Basketball team welcomed 2021 the same way they said farewell to 2020: with a league win. This time the Spartans (2-5 overall, 2-3 ECC) beat their cross-township arch-rival Basketball Team 33-25 in front of the socially distanced fans at Klinger Court. Kyla Zananiri lead Turpin with 10 points while shooting an unheard of 71% from the floor. Paige Dornheggen added 9 points while sister Lauren Dornheggen grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 2 shots. The Spartans started fast and never trailed in this game. Good perimeter defense was especially important for Turpin as the Team From Across Beechmont fired up a remarkable 27 3 point shots over the 4 quarters of action. The quick Spartan defenders held their opponent to a 15% shooting percentage from behind the arc, minimizing the impact of their shooters.
The first quarter action featured a balanced Spartan attack. Kate Palmer led things off with a dribble drive to the basket for 2. Kaci Sheffer, Lauren Dornheggen and Kyla Zananiri also hit from the floor as the Spartans doubled up the opponent 8-4. The teams traded baskets throughout the 2nd quarter with the margin remaining 4 points at 14-10 heading into halftime. Zananiri and Lauren Dornheggen paced the Spartans with Elizabeth Wullenweber adding a mid-paint jumper to close it out.
Turpin opened the game up in the 3rd, extending their lead to 10 points. Paige Dornheggen found her shooting touch, hitting for 7 points in the 3rd including her first 3 pointer of the afternoon. After 3 quarters Turpin led 25-15. Again the teams went into trading baskets in the 4th quarter. Anderson connected on 2 3 pointers to cut the Turpin lead to 8, but could get no closer.
The Spartans look to continue their winning ways with a busy week ahead with conference matchups against West Clermont and Winton Woods and a non-conference trip to Mariemont.
