Spartans Beat Walnut Hills

For the first time of 2021, The Turpin Spartans Girls Soccer program tasted victory, 2-1 over Walnut Hills Tuesday evening.  The Spartans (1-6-0 overall, 1-2-0 ECC) rallied late to defeat the 9th ranked Eagles 2-1.  Junior Kate Hooper led the way with a goal and an assist.  Sydney Riley added a goal, Mallory Harsha stopped 6 shots and Kaci Sheffer tallied 5 tackles in the winning effort.
Just nine minutes into this match Hooper found herself with a one-on-one opportunity against the Eagle keeper.  Kate ‘The Great’ made a nifty move and buried her 3rd goal of the season to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.  Walnut showed why they’ve earned a Top-10 ranking in the region, continually attacking the Spartan end and creating shots on Harsha.  The Spartan Defense held up their end nicely with senior Keely McCosh and junior Lucia Johnson locking down the middle of the field.  Walnut had an opportunity with about 8 minutes to go in the half as a long outlet pass found their midfielder with only 1 Spartan to beat on her way to the goal.  Unfortunately for the Eagles, that lone Spartan was Sheffer and she negated the threat with a hard tackle near midfield.  The tackle drew a yellow card for her, but kept the game at 1-0 Turpin.  With just under 3 minutes in the half, Walnut Hills finally broke through, connecting on a shot from the right side 8 yards out.  The teams entered the half tied at 1.
After a first half that saw the teams combine for 13 shots on goal, the second half became a defensive match.  Walnut Hills managed only 1 shot in the second half, and it sailed 10 feet wide of the net.  The Spartans similarly sailed 1 shot wide over the final 36 minutes.  But with just over 4 minutes left in the match, Hooper made her push up the left sideline.  When the defender committed to stopping her, Kate sent a short cross to the middle of the field to Riley.  It was all Sydney from there, firing the game winner into the home team’s net.  A stunned Eagles team tried to rally in the closing minutes but the Spartan D went into lock down mode and secured the victory.
Turpin looks to build on their first victory of the season with a quick turnaround league matchup against the Lebanon Warriors at Spartan Stadium on Thursday evening.
