Harsha With The Pick

The Spartans Girls Soccer program looked to extend their conference winning streak to 2 games last Thursday at Spartan Stadium in a matchup with ECC foe Lebanon.  Turpin (1-7-0 overall, 1-3-0 ECC) couldn’t find that elusive goal against the Warriors and in the 70th minute surrendered the only score of the match, falling 1-0.  Brooke Heis, Lucia Johnson and Mallory Harsha starred for the Spartans in defeat.  The senior captain Heis placed 2 shots on goal and led the way with 7 tackles won.  Johnson continued her season of solid play also notching 2 shots on goal while sticking the Warriors with 5 tackles.  Harsha was great in the goal for Turpin 7 saves on 8 chances.

Even though Lebanon is only in their second year as members of the ECC, this game had the feel of an old-school, physical ECC clash.  Both teams gave up the body on tackles and defense ruled the day, making the offenses of both clubs work for every shooting opportunity.  In the first half, Turpin had 3 shots within the 18 yd box, but each went wide or over the net.  Lebanon meanwhile settled for longer distance attempts from free kicks, shooting 3 times from 40 yards out.  Harsha easily corralled these attempts.  At halftime the score was tied at 0-0.

The teams reversed their trends in the second half, with Turpin hitting more shots from outside the box (4) while Lebanon attacked more from the edge of the box, in the 20 yard range.  With just under 10 minutes to go, Lebanon took a free kick from 25 yards out to the left of keeper Harsha.  The centering shot paid off as a Warrior player moving to the right headed the ball into the goal.  The Spartans played the final 9 minutes with passion and intensity, never giving in, but it wasn’t enough.  Lebanon held on for a 1-0 final score.

Turpin looks to get back on the winning track next Tuesday at Winton Woods.  The match starts at 7:00 PM for those making the trip to the northwest corner of town.
