Good Knight! Win Streak at 3

Posted on: October 21, 2021

Riding a 2 game win streak, the Spartans girls soccer team traveled to ECC opponent Kings on Tuesday, Oct 5th looking to move their conference record to .500.  Turpin (5-9 overall, 4-4 ECC) fell behind early to the Lady Knights on their Senior Night, but rallied in the second half to notch a 2-1 victory.  The win gives Turpin 3-in-a-row for the first time this season as the girls build momentum towards the playoffs.  Team goals leader Kate Hooper led the way with a goal and an assist.  Freshman Avery Ackel had a goal and junior Alexandra Johnson added an assist.  Keeper Mallory Harsha turned away 4 of 5 shots on goal and sophomore Brooke Wilson keyed the defense with 4 tackles won.

Kings came out riding a wave of energy and emotion after honoring their seniors and struck first.  In the 7th minute they connected from the right side of the box, putting the Spartans in a 1-0 hole.  Midway through the half, the Spartans started picking up steam.  A series of Kings fouls and Turpin free kicks into the goal area energized the team.  In the 31st minute Ackel took a pass from Hooper and blasted the shot from 35 yards out.  Her aim was perfect, just under the crossbar where nobody could touch it, tie game.  Kings threatened right before the half.  Center backs Keely McCosh and Lucia Johnson sandwiched the Knights attacker in the zone with under a minute on the clock to negate the threat.

Kings remained on the attack to begin the second half.  Wilson made a great tackle in the box to turn back a rush.  The subsequent corner kick sailed wide and Turpin regained control of the ball, and the match.  In the 56th minute, senior Taylor Bliss had an opportunity to put Turpin ahead, but her shot from the right side deflected off a Kings foot and tailed just outside the goal.  Bliss took the resultant corner kick, but Turpin couldn’t convert.  In the 72nd minute, when it looked as if we were headed for a tie, Alexandra Johnson found Hooper on the cross and Kate did the rest, rocketing the ball past the Knight keeper for a 2-1 lead.  Harsha and the defense made sure that margin would hold up.

Turpin will next take their winning ways north of the city to visit the Fenwick Falcons on Saturday, October 9th in their last non-conference game of the regular season.
