Good Night, Spartans Beat the Knights!

Posted on: December 15, 2020
Brady Hardewig headlined a trio of Spartan double-digit scorers as Turpin raced out to a huge lead and never looked back Friday night in defeating the Kings Knights 58-45.  Matt Sheffer and Deven Marathe set individual career scoring highs with Sheffer pouring in 11 points and Marathe netting 10 points as Turpin (2-1 overall, 2-0 ECC) won their second ECC road game in a row.  Ethan Zinn cleared the way on the glass for the Spartans with 6 rebounds to go with his 9 points.
From the opening tip off, Turpin’s offense was firing on all cylinders.  Sheffer drove the lane, drawing the foul and hitting both free throws.  Next possession, Sheffer drained a long three pointer.  Hardewig went to the hole for 2 and Marathe hit his first three ball, all within the first 4 minutes of the game.  Halfway though the first, Turpin led, 10-8.  The Spartans would find another gear, both offensively and defensively as they closed the quarter on a 12-2 run.  Nate Hayas drained a jumper for his first career varsity hoop.  Zinn followed that with a long 3 pointer and then a mid-range jumper.  Sheffer stroked his 2nd trey of the quarter and Marathe ended the first with a jumper and a 22-10 Turpin lead.
Kings refused to go quietly into the (k)night though, battling back in the second.  Overall, they outscored Turpin 15-13 in the quarter and opened it up with a 6-0 run.  Their run was squashed by Sheffer as he nailed his 3rd bomb of the game.  For the remainder of the quarter, the teams mostly traded hoops.  Kings hit a 3, but Hardewig answered on the other end.  Hardewig’s 6 points in the quarter fueled the Turpin offense.  Junior Jack Selfridge became the second Spartan to notch his first varsity points as he took a pass from Marathe and calmly hit the shot.  Turpin headed to the locker room at the half up 35-25.
One can only imagine Coach Slonim’s fiery halftime speech and displeasure with simply trading basket for basket.  Turpin came out of the locker room looking to duplicate their first quarter success at both ends of the basket, and they did.  The Spartans doubled up the Knights in the quarter, 18-9 is opening a 53-34 lead.  In the Fox19 News highlights from the evening, Matthew Johnson perfectly executed a back-cut on the inbounds play for the score.  Johnson’s move was so good there wasn’t a Kings player within a 6 foot socially-distance bubble of him.  With 20 seconds left in the quarter, Coach Slonim gave Marathe the ‘one shot’ command.  Marathe calmly waited until only seconds remained before faking a dribble drive and swishing the step-back three.  Turpin players continued to set personal milestones in the 4th quarter as Max Gundrum notched his first varsity points on a bucket in the paint.  The Spartans slowed the game down from there and walked away with a 58-45 victory.
Turpin next takes the court on Tuesday, December 15th in a home matchup against West Clermont.  Prior to the game, we will honor this year’s seniors with an on-court ceremony.  Varsity tip-off is at 7:30 and the game will be Live Streamed.
