JV Boys Basketball Drops Home Opener

Turpin lost a tough one at home to Lakota West 69-47.  Turpin was plagued by costly turnovers and too many offensive rebounds for their opponent.  Brady Hardewig scored the first 8 points for the Spartans however Turpin trailed 10-8 midway through the 1st quarter.  After three baskets by Nathan Hayas, Jarin TerHorst and a coast to coast drive by Joey Schulok to beat the buzzer Turpin trailed 16-14 after the 1st quarter.

Hardewig opened the 2nd quarter scoring with his third 3 pointer of the game but Turpin trailed 19-17.  Two free throws by Max Gundrum after a strong drive to the hoop tied the score at 19 with just over 5 minutes left before halftime.  After a couple of free throws by Jack Selfridge and Hayas before halftime the Spartans trailed 28-24 at the intermission.  

Lakota West opened the 2nd half on a 5-0 run to build the lead to 9.  Will Schulok got the first basket for Turpin in the 2nd half with a sweet runner.  After a 3 point field goal by Selfridge and a lay up by TerHorst followed by Hardewig’s 4th 3 point field goal of the game Turpin cut the lead to 39-34.  Will Schulok then hit another sweet runner to once again cut the LW lead to 5...43-38. After back to back 3’s by LW to close out the 3rd quarter, Turpin found themselves in a hole 53-38.

The 4th quarter was filled with lots of Turpin turnovers that led to easy transition baskets for LW and the Spartans would go down 69-47.  

Brady Hardewig led the Spartans in scoring with 14 pts.  Will Schulok had 8 pts while both Jarin TerHorst and Nate Hayas chipped in 6 pts each.
