JV Maroon Soccer Cages Tigers

Posted on: October 19, 2020
aying for the 3rd time in 4 days, the JV Maroon Spartans turned in a dominating performance Tuesday evening caging the Bethel Tate Tigers 3-1.  Some observers called it the Karah Miller show, as the freshman tallied a goal and an assist in the win.  Gabby Seybold and Kaci Sheffer also scored for Turpin (6-3-4 overall, 2-0-2 ECC), while Mia Thibodeau assisted on Sheffer’s goal.  The defense played stout all evening, anchored by Grace Aman with 2 tackles, while keeper Lily Smith turned away 4 of the 5 shots she faced.
Coming off a Monday night draw against Seton, the Spartans started the game with great intensity, attacking the Tiger goal early and often.  Seybold took a pass from Miller on the left side of the field, made a move and found an open crease in the Tiger defense.  Her shot from 10 yards out beat the keeper to the near side and staked the Spartans to a 1-0 first half lead.  Turpin launched 7 shots total in the first half, with 5 of them being on goal.  Lilly Peveler led the charge with 3, Seybold had 2 with Addie Buckley and Sheffer each taking 1.  Bethel Tate played most of the first half in the midfield and Spartan offensive zone, managing only 3 shots which Smith easily handled.
Turpin extended their lead in the second half thanks to excellent corner kicks from Peveler.  On the first attempt, Peveler’s high, arcing corner into the zone forced Bethel Tate to try for the hasty clearing kick.  Thibodeau trapped the ball 20 yards out and sent a shot (or maybe a great pass?) high towards the goalie.  Sheffer applied the pressure and when the goalie couldn’t get her hands on the shot, blasted in into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.  The Tigers responded 5 minutes later as they snuck a shot by Smith to cut the deficit to 2-1.  But this was Turpin’s night, and Miller closed the cage door on the Tigers with her blast from 14 yards out with 10 minutes remaining.  Again the goal was set up with an excellent Peveler corner.  The ball caromed off several Spartan feet before a clearing strike from Bethel Tate.  Miller raced forward and one-timed the ball past the keeper for the 3-1 Spartan lead and victory.
The Spartans look to close out their season with 2 remaining games.  Saturday, October 10th they’re rematch with the Mount Notre Dame Cougars at Spartan Stadium and then they’ll finish up on the road against Roger Bacon on Saturday, October 17th.
