JV Spartans Soar Past Eagles

Turpin defeated ECC foe Walnut Hills 51-39 behind a strong 2nd half and an outstanding performance by Matt Johnson.  Turpin led 14-7 after the 1st quarter with Johnson scoring 12 pts in the quarter including two 3 point field goals. Will Schulok scored the other basket with a strong drive to the hoop.  

The Eagles cut the lead to 3 in the second quarter, but Brady Hardewig hit a 3 pointer to build the lead to 6...19-13 with 3:30 left in the first half.  Max Gundrum then scored on a lay up as did Matt Johnson via a sweet OB play. Turpin held a 4 point lead at the half 23-19.

The Eagles opened the 2nd half with a 7-0 run to take the lead 26-23 two minutes into the quarter.  Hardewig then hit back to back 3 point field goals to reclaim the lead 29-27. Johnson then drove to the basket for 2 while Jaiden Alcalde found Hardewig in transition for a lay up.  Johnson then scored 5 straight points to build the Turpin lead to 39-31 with 1 minute left in the 3rd quarter.Johnson then assisted to Will Schulok to beat the buzzer for a conventional 3 point play as Turpin enjoyed their largest lead at 42-31.

Tate Johnson opened the 4th quarter with a 3 point field goal off an assist from Hardewig.  Walnut Hills seemed to turn the game into a track meet and speed Turpin up. Turpin had an answer!  Hardewig went coast to coast for a left handed lay up and Max Gundrum had back to back assists to Jack Selfridge and Nate Hayas to close out the Eagles 51-39.

Matt Johnson led the Spartan attack with 20 points.  Brady Hardewig added 13 points and Will Schulok chipped in 7 points.
