Sophia Schiano headed a corner kick from Lilly Peveler into the back of the net during 57th minute of Saturday’s matchup against Mount Notre Dame, leading the JV Maroon Spartans to a 1-0 victory.  Keeper Lily Smith posted the clean sheet for the Spartans (2-1-2 overall, 0-0-1 ECC), stopping all 8 shots on goal from the Cougars.  JV Maroon won despite being outshot 14-6, as the team got excellent goal keeping, stout defense that prevented high percentage shots on goal, and timely offense.

Saturday started off cool and cloudy in the Queen City, perfect fall soccer weather.  But by 4 PM  game time, the sunshine, heat and humidity returned, promising tough conditions for 72 minutes of soccer.   Turpin started off strong in the game, with Nina Birk and Dara Berger each unleashing 2 shots on goal within the first 15 minutes of action.  Neither could find pay dirt, and the play slowly shifted to the Cougar end of the field.  Mount Notre Dame players took a whopping 9 shots on the Spartan goal in the first half.  But stats can be deceiving, because only 2 shots came from within 18 yds of the goal.  The Spartan defenders held their line well and prevented MND any meaningful runs through the box.  The Cougars settled for trying to pepper Smith from long range, and she easily turned their shots away.  Smith turned in one Sports Center worthy highlight late in the half as one of the long range shots headed for the top  of the goal.  She got a great vertical jump on the shot, deflecting it upwards and then snatching it from the air on her way down.  We went to half tied at zero.

The teams settled into a midfield possession game in the second half, with neither team able to generate much offensively in the first 10 minutes or so of the second half.  But Turpin’s excellent conditioning showed through as the game wore on and gradually most of the 50/50 balls in the middle of the field turned into Turpin touches, which led to Turpin runs at the goal.  With 15 minutes remaining, one such run resulted in a Turpin corner kick to the right of the MND goal.  Peveler struck the perfect arc, 7 yards in front of the goal.  Schiano timed her leap perfectly, striking the ball in the center of the field and lining it to the right side of the goal, past the diving Cougar keeper.  The Spartan defense would make the 1-0 lead stand up.  They clamped down hard on MND and smothered any offensive run with strong tackling.

JV Maroon makes a quick turnaround this week with a 6:00 PM rematch on Monday against That Team Across Beechmont.  The girls then travel to Seven Hills for a game on Wednesday evening.
