JVM Drops Rematch to Mason

The Turpin JV Maroon Girls Soccer squad looked to avenge their only loss of the season in their home opener Saturday versus the Mason Comets.  Freshman Gabby Seybold scored in the second half for the Spartans (4-2-3 overall, 1-0-2 ECC), but Turpin couldn’t overcome an early 2 goal deficit and dropped the rematch 2-1.  Defender Grace Aman assisted on Seybold’s goal, while Spartan Keeper Lily Smith turned away 8 Comet shots on goal in the loss.

A beautiful Saturday morning on the hill at Spartan Stadium was the perfect backdrop for this game.  JVM plays a tough, physical style of soccer, and the matchup with Mason lived up to the pregame hype.  The early action had Mason on the attack and the Spartans struggling to keep up on the defensive side.  Mason put 8 shots on goal against our keeper and snuck 2 shots by Smith off of set plays.  On the other end, Turpin managed a few counter attacks and put together 3 good shots of their own, but the Comet goalie turned them all aside.  The best of the bunch was Addie Buckley’s free kick off a Mason handball.  Only a highlight-reel save prevented the goal.  At halftime the Spartans trailed 2-0.

Turpin stiffened up their defense in the second half and started to exert control of the midfield.  This led to better offensive opportunities.  With 27 minutes remaining, Aman lined up for a free kick off a Comet foul from 30 yards out.  She placed a perfect rainbow into the goal box that had a great chance of scoring on its own.  At the last second, a Mason defender got a piece of the ball and deflected it high into the air.  Seybold was charging from the kick and executed a textbook header, taking the ball from the air and redirecting it past a surprised Comet goalie.  Turpin would get 2 more good looks at tying the match, Dara Berger’s 15 yarder was handled by the goalie and Lilly Peveler’s 20 yarder sailed wide of the net.  The backline defense of Aman, Sophia Schiano, Karah Miller, Mia Thibodeau and Kaci Sheffer allowed only 2 shots on goal for the final 36 minutes.  One of those was from 40 yards out on a free kick and the other from deep in the corner that Smith easily saved.  In the end, Turpin couldn’t pull off an equalizer and the match ended in a 2-1 loss for the home team.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, September 30th with an ECC matchup against the Milford Eagles.  Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM at Spartan Stadium.
