After three straight playoff appearances, Turpin’s football Spartans experienced a stunning downturn this season, ending their campaign with a 1-9 record. Milford pasted a 56-21 season ending loss of the Spartans, controlling the game throughout. As has been the case for nearly all games this season, the Spartans fell behind early and made to many mistakes to keep the game close.
Once again George Machenheimer scored Turpin’s initial touchdown on a 45 yard touchdown pass from Devan Nigam in the second quarter. Nigam also hit Will Schroeder for a 42 yard TD with 7 seconds remaining in the first half, but in a microcosm of the season, Milford ran back the ensuing kickoff to close the half, leading 42-14. The second half included a second Schroeder/Nigam connection of 26 yards. On a bright note, Addi Braun was successful on all three extra point attempts in the game and was 11 for 12 for the season (5 games) and 2 for 2 on field goal attempts. For the season, Machenheimer, Schroeder and Clark Helgason tied for the scoring lead, each scoring four TDs.
The conclusion of the 2022 season brings several Turpin careers to a close, including captains Machenheimer, Helgason, Jackson Gertz, Cam Hull, and Cody Hurst. Preparation for the 2023 campaign starts with the hope that many of the younger players, who gained experience this year, will work hard throughout the off season to help the program regain its rightful position at the top of the ECC. While Turpin has the smallest enrollment in the ECC, the Spartans have historically competed at or near the top of the league, but that only happens with commitment and effort.
