Spartans Advance Past Western Brown

Posted on: March 1, 2020
Theisen Lee led the way for a trio of double-digit Spartan scorers with 16 points as the Turpin Spartans downed the Western Brown Broncos in the first round of the sectional playoffs, 59-42.  Senior Harry Tyszkiewicz and junior Dom Cantrella each had 10 points for the Spartans (1-0 playoffs, 13-1 ECC, 20-3 overall).  Turpin reached the 20 win plateau for only the second time in school history.
The Spartan offense got going right out of the gate in the first quarter, paced by a pair Tyskiewicz 3 point bombs.  Seven Spartans scored in the first frame and ten Spartans registered baskets in the game.  Senior Owen Spencer started things off from the low block with a nice basket.  After the Broncos tied it at 2, Trey Shetler finished at the hoop for 2, assisted by Lee.  Lee would score next, followed by Josh Bell, Ethan Zinn, Tyskiewicz and Cantrella.  Dom’s dribble drive and foul with 5 seconds left in the quarter put Turpin ahead 19-6 on the old-school three point play.  The Broncos added a bit of excitement when their guard launched a 40 footer at the buzzer that was good, but still the Spartans were too much to handle and led 19-9 after 1 quarter of action.
Balanced scoring and tight D rules the second quarter as well, with five Spartans getting in on the action.  This time Spencer was at the top of the stat sheet with 4 points.  Cantrella had three while Lee, Shetler and Tyskiewicz all had a basket. Turpin started the second quarter with a 9-0 scoring run, building the lead to 19 points at 28-9.   Western Brown showed pride and heart against the Spartans, mounting a rally from the free throw line and behind the arc.  Fueled by a pair of 3’s, they closed the gap to 12 at the half, 32-20.
The Spartans’ size, speed and athleticism continued on display in the second half.  Spencer, Bell and Lee were monsters on the glass all night, with 6, 5, and 5 rebounds respectively.  Turpin grew their lead to 16 points in the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter, Jackson Holt, Deven Marathe and Quincy Mussio joined the scoring parade.  The final in this one was 59-42.
The Spartan win sets up a second round rematch from earlier this season.  Turpin will face the Elder Panthers on Thursday, 2/27 at Lakota West HS.  Tipoff is slated for 7:30.  Recall the Spartans beat the Panthers back in January, 46-43 at Klinger Court.
