Spartans Battle to Second Place Finish at City Championship

Posted on: February 18, 2020

The Cincinnati City Gymnastics championship was held on Saturday February 15th at Cincinnati Country Day.  Nine teams from around the Tri-state participated in the event: Turpin, Anderson, Oak Hills, Kings, Seven Hills, Cincinnati Country Day, Lakota West, Lakota East and Badin.  In addition, there were several individual athletes that competed as well. The Spartan’s, for the first time this season, experienced some set-backs as falls on both the beam and floor events caused some heartache for the gymnasts.  Yet, despite their set-backs, they were still able to power through and came out 2nd in the City, a testament to their skill, perseverance, and spirit. A very impressive finish for a day that did not go the way they had hoped.

The Spartan’s started the day off strong on the bars.  Maycee Herzog placed 2nd in the event and Elizabeth Miller placed 3rd.  Serra Tuzun and Anna Grimes also contributed to the overall team score.

Beam was next and this is where the gymnasts took some hits with too many falls that had to be counted in their team score.  However, despite this, Maycee was able to finish in 3rd and was joined in the team score by Serra Tuzun, Elizabeth Miller and Whitney Welling.

Moving on to the floor, Senior Amber Russell led the way with a 9.15 and a 2nd place finish.  Natalie Mays, Serra, and Maycee all earned points for the team.

The Spartan’s completed the meet on vault.  The Spartan’s had a season high vault score.  Maycee took 5th place with Anna Grimes in 6th.  Amber and Alice Utz also added to the score.

In the All-around it was Maycee Herzog in 2nd.  In addition, 5 Turpin gymnasts were named to the All City Honor Team: Anna Grimes, Maycee Herzog, Elizabeth Miller, Amber Russell and Serra Tuzun.

The Spar10’s are looking to get back into the gym this week to regroup and prepare for this week’s Districts Meet which will be held on Saturday February 22nd at Lakota East.  Start time is 10am.

Please come out and support these very hard-working and talented gymnasts!!!
