Spartans Fall to the Knights

The battle of one loss teams did not disappoint at Klinger Court!  However, Kings scored in the last few seconds to defeat the Spartans 46-44 and give Turpin its second loss in ECC play.  Sophomore Shea O’Tool opened the game with a 3 point basket off an assist from Brady Hardewig.  Hardewig then scored the Spartans next 4 points with 2 free throws and a strong drive to the basket as Turpin enjoyed a 7-2 lead.  O’Tool scored again as he drove to the basket for 2, however Kings ended the 1st quarter on a 9-0 run and led 11-9 at the end of 1.

Hardewig ended the 12-0 Knights run with 4 straight points that included a turnaround jumper at the free throw line and another drive to the basket.  O’Tool continued the run with a basket as Turpin reclaimed the lead 15-14 late in the 2nd quarter.  O’Tool banged down 2 free throws just before halftime as Turpin tailed 21-17 at the intermission.

O’Tool continued his run of 6 straight points with another drive to the basket for 2.  Hardewig then hit a long pull up 2 point basket and when Hardewig found fellow senior Nate Hayas for a 3 point basket the Spartans trailed again by only 1 at 25-24.  Senior Clark Helgason fed fellow senior Brad Schauer underneath for a strong basket and tied the game at 26.  Hardewig then grabbed a steal and had a coast to coast assist to Schauer as Turpin led 28-26.  Hardewig continued to score down low with a fade away baseline jumper and 30-29 Spartan lead.  O’Tool scored again as the game went back and forth.  Schauer then got an offensive rebound stick back to push the Spartan lead to 34-31.  Hardewig then rebounded his own miss and powered up a lay up as the game was tied at 36 after 3 quarters of play.  

The 4th quarter was an absolute rock fight as both teams got really physical.  Hardewig scored 6 points in the quarter with a free throw, a drive to the basket 2 and a deep 3 pointer as Turpin trailed 43-42 with less than a minute remaining.  Schauer was fouled with 27 seconds left and calmly sank both free throws to tie the game at 44.  However, the Knights hit a runner in the lane with .8 seconds left to take back the lead at 46-44.  A last second hail mary by the Spartans came up short as Turpin lost 46-44 in a low scoring ECC slugfest!

Brady Hardewig led the way with 20 points.  His backcourt teammate Shea O’Tool scored 13 points.  Brady Schauer chipped in 8 points and Nate Hayas added 3 points.
