Spartans Get the W as Hardewig Records 1,000 points

Posted on: February 9, 2023
The Turpin fans got to see a tough win and some history as senior Brady Hardewig recorded his 1,000th point.  The Spartans started things off with some good team passing and a final feed from senior Dylan Linton to fellow senior Nate Hayas for the floater.  Turpin tied the game at 5 after senior Clark Helgason hit a 3 at the top of the arc.  Winton Woods, however, rattled off 6 straight points to end the first quarter with a 11-5 lead.

The second quarter began with a corner 3 from Hayas off the assist from Hardewig.  Hardewig was then able to get his first 2 points of the night on a putback after getting his own rebound. After Winton Woods went on another mini run, Sophomore Shea O'Toole drove the lane and got fouled.  He hit both free throws to cut the deficit to 12-19.  Helgason grabbed an offensive rebound and got the putback to cut the lead to 5 points.  O'Toole then hit a floater in the line to get the Spartans closer at 16-19.  The last Spartan points of the half were the most memorable.  Hardewig again fought to get the offensive rebound and put back as the horn sounded.  That basket was Hardewig's 1,000th Turpin point and the crowd showed their appreciation.  The Spartans trailed 18-23 at the end of the half.

Turpin came out of the break reenergized.  Hayas started things off on the defensive end by taking a charge and then getting a steal for the coast to coast layup.  Senior Brad Shauer then showed off his rebounding skills.  His first was a tough offensive rebound that led to a floater by O'Toole.  He followed that up with a defensive rebound and great outlet to O'Toole that cut the deficit to 24-26.  O'Toole took another Turpin charge to fire up the team.  Linton got on the board with a nice drive in the lane.  Turpin finally tied the game at the 3:27 mark after Hayas hit a 3 off the assist from Hardewig.  Hayas then stole the ball on the other end and drove the length of the court to give the Spartans their first lead since they were up 2-0.  Schauer made a good move in the lane to put Turpin up 33-31.  Helgason capped off the 3rd quarter with another 3 and a 36-35 lead.

In the 4th, Linton got on the board first after a nice drive and pass by O'Toole.  Helgason got his 3rd 3-pointer of the night to push the Spartan lead to 41-35.  Hardewig hit a nice jumper out of a Turpin timeout to push the lead back to 6. Hardewig then made a great no look pass to Schauer for the layin.  Schauer then went to the other end and came up with a big time block to give the ball back to Turpin.  The Spartans lead 45-43 with 1:19 left when Winton Woods started fouling to extend the game.  O'Toole went to the line first and hit both free throws.  Hayas made 1 of 2 to give Turpin a 48-44 lead.  Sophomore Isaac Hooper then iced the game by hitting 2 free throws and giving Turpin the 50-44 victory.
