Spartans Ground Eagles

The re-match between the Spartans and the Eagles lived up to the hype as Turpin avenged it’s only league loss 5 days prior to this same Walnut Hills team.  Turpin used toughness and down the stretch execution to defeat the visiting Eagles 62-56.  Brady Hardewig got on the board first with an offensive rebound where he was fouled and connected on both free throws.  A 3 point basket by Deven Marathe followed by a strong drive to the hoop by Theisen Lee prompted the Eagles to call an early timeout as Turpin led 7-2.  Dominic Cantrella connected on a 3 point basket to end a 5-0 Walnut Hills run to reclaim the lead 10-7...a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game!  Hardewig got fouled again driving to the hoop and after he made two more free throws Turpin led 16-12 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Ethan Zinn opened the second quarter with a 3 point basket and when Hardewig hit a 3 pointer of his own with 6:25 before intermission Walnut Hills was forced to call another timeout.  Hardewig then hit a long jump shot off the bounce to extend the Spartan lead to 24-12.  Zinn then hit his second 3 point basket of the game ending a 5-0 Walnut Hills run.  Marathe then hit two free throws to close out the quarter as Turpin led 30-23 at the half.

Cantrella opened up the second half scoring with a 3 point basket and 2 free throws to build the lead back to 10 at 37-27.  Zinn then went to work with a baseline pull up jumper.  Cantrella came right back with 4 straight points going coast to coast for a lay up and a strong drive to the basket to keep the lead at 10.  Hardewig took his man off the bounce and hit a pull up jump shot.  Theisen Lee scored a basket before the 3rd quarter ended as the Spartans led 47-36 heading into the 4th quarter.

The Eagles came out in the 4th quarter with a chip on their shoulder and a trapping defense that led to some Turpin turnovers and easy baskets.

Cantrella then made a sweet move and finish to end a 6-0 Walnut Hills run.  The final 13 points for Turpin all came via the free throw line...Cantrella 5-6, Lee 3-4, Zinn 1-2 and Hardewig 4-4 as the Spartans held off the Eagles to win 62-56.  With the win Turpin is now tied with Lebanon for first place with one week left in ECC play.

Brady Hardewig led the Spartans in scoring with 20 points along with 3 steals.  Dom Cantrella scored 19 points while also grabbing 2 rebounds and handing out 1 assist.  Theisen Lee and Ethan Zinn each scored 9 points while Deven Marathe added 5 points.
