West Clermont

In the most hyped game of this young season, the Turpin Spartans put the clamps on the West Clermont Wolves. Jackson Holt led the effort with a season high 20 points, followed by Dominic Cantrella with 11. With the victory, Turpin’s record improves to 5 – 0 (2 – 0 ECC.)

Anticipation was running high prior to the tip off, as both teams likely had this game circled on their
calendars once the 2019-20 schedule was released. Owen Spencer put Turpin on the board first with a
baseline jumper. He finished the night with a solid defensive effort including five rebounds and three
blocks. Cantrella followed up with seven straight for the home team, including an “and-one.” West
Clermont seemed to try and slow the pace of the game, which worked to some degree as they led 12-11
at the end of the first quarter.

Jackson Holt drained a three to begin the second, giving the Spartans a 14-12 lead. They would not trail
for the remainder of the game. Holt followed with a baseline drive and another three, before West
Clermont called a time out. Turpin added another point when Trey Shetler went to the line after a hard
foul. By the end of the game, Shetler pulled down six rebounds and had one steal. At half, Turpin led
20-15, holding the Wolves to only three points in the second quarter.

Things got ugly early in the third, as there was a slew of fouls and turn overs for both teams. No points
were scored by either squad until the 4:30 mark when Holt got on the floor and flipped a loose ball to
Cantrella who streaked down the floor for the layup. Dominic finished with a game high five assists to
go along with two steals. The Wolves scored 5 straight to pull within three at 23-20. As is becoming
more common, Ethan Zinn had a critical bucket after he smoothly side-stepped a defender and
deposited a three in the closing seconds of the quarter.

Turpin opened the fourth with an 8-2 run including six by Holt and a layup by Josh Bell who was left
alone under the basket, which extended the lead to ten. The Wolves appeared to lose track of Deven
Marathe and he made them pay by sinking a three-point dagger, giving the Spartans a 39-24 lead and
ending any West Clermont hopes for a comeback with 3:27 remaining. Quincy Mussio drove the final
nail, as he backed down his defender and finished with a baby hook to cap the 46-28 victory.

West Clermont succeeded in slowing the game down, but they could not penetrate Turpin’s solid
defense, which did not allow the Wolves to score double digits in any quarter after the first. It was a
satisfying win and sweet revenge against the reigning ECC Champs from 2018-19. Next up is a Friday
night contest against cross-town rivals, “That Team Across Beechmont,” who will be coming into Klinger
Court with “upset” on their minds. LET’S GO SPARTANS!!!
