Spartans Strong Finish Dumps the Warriors

Turpin went on the road and used a strong 4th quarter finish to win going away 67-53 and also remain in the ECC conference championship race.  Brady Hardewig got the Spartans on the board first with 2 free throws and an early 2-0 lead.  Hardewig then assisted fellow senior Brad Schauer on a fast break layup and a 4-2 lead.  Clark Helgason had a left hand finish inside as both teams traded baskets.  The Hardewig to Schauer combination worked again for 2 followed by 2 free throws from Sophomore Shea O’Toole as the Spartans led 10-8 at the end of the 1st quarter.

Senior Nate Hayas found O’Toole on the perimeter for a 3 pointer to end a 6-0 Lebanon run.  Hardewig sank two more free throws as Turpin regained the lead 15-14 midway through the 2nd quarter.  O’Toole banged down another 3 point basket and an 18-17 Spartan lead.  Hardewig racked up another assist with this one coming on the fast break to Hayas running the floor.  O’Toole got into the assist column via a nice feed to Helgason for 2.  Hardewig converted a conventional 3 point play just before half as the Spartans led 25-20 at the intermission.

The teams traded punches throughout the 3rd quarter as Turpin could not pull away.  Hardewig knocked down 2 free throws early in the quarter as he kept attacking.  Senior Dylan Linton scored 5 straight points with a 3 point basket and a sweet spin move finish for 2 while giving Turpin its largest lead 32-24.  O’Toole attacked the basket for 2 and Hardewig followed that up with two more assists as Helgason was the reciepiant of both passes and 4 more points for the senior.  Another and one for Hardewig with 2:48 left in the 3rd quarter pushed the Spartan lead to 41-35.  O’Toole knocked down 2 free throws to finish the quarter, however Lebanon would not go away as the Spartan lead was only 4 at 43-39 heading into the final quarter.

Turpin pushed the lead to 50-42 with 2 free throws from Helgason and a 3rd and one from Hardewig.  Then Linton took over!!  The senior scored 9 straight points that included 2 free throws, a sweet up and under finish, a strong drive to the basket and also a conventional 3 point play as the lead ballooned to 11 at 59-48.  From there the Spartans continued to dominate and close out the game with some free throws and a basket from Hayas via an assist from Hardewig.  Add it all up and the Spartans pulled out the road W 67-53 and stayed in contention for the ECC league championship.

It is worth noting that the Spartans finished 22-22 as a team from the free throw line!!
