Spartans Take Down West Clermont

West Clermont put up a battle against Turpin, but the Spartans were too much for them to handle. Things were a little sloppy early on but did see a nice bounce pass from Senior Clark Helgason to fellow Senior Brad Schauer for the layin and a good baseline drive by Sophomore Shea O'Toole for the bucket. O'Toole had another drive to the basket and Helgason took the inbounds and put it in to give Turpin an 8-4 lead. Unfortunately, West Clermont went on a 9-0 run that wasn't stopped until Shauer grabbed an offensive rebound, got fouled on the putback and hit both free throws. The first quarter ended with Turpin trailing 10-13.
O'Toole got the first 5 points of the 2nd for Turpin with a nice spin move in the lane and a 3 to cut the lead to 15-16. Senior Brady Hardewig got into the action with the next 5 points on a baseline jumper and deep 3. The wolves kept making their shots though. The lead was cut back to 2 after a great pass from Hardewig to Schauer for the layup. Schauer would hit a free throw later in the half, but that was all Turpin got as they trailed 23-28 going to the break.
Schauer got the first 4 points of the 2nd half off an assist from O'Toole and then Hardewig. A nice hesi drive by Hardewig followed by a kickout to Helgason for a corner 3 cut the lead down to 32-34. Hardewig and Senior Nate Hayas then combined on a trap to get the steal and layup for Hardewig to tie the game at 34 with 1:21 left in the 3rd. Some nice team passing led to a floater in the lane from Helgason to give the Spartans a 36-34 lead going to the 4th.
The 4th quarter was all Turpin as they outscored West Clermont 17-6. Hardewig and O'Toole hit 3 free throws to start things off and Schauer got a quick bucket to push the lead to 41-36. A nice defensive stop led to an outlet pass from Hayas to Hardewig for the layup and the foul. Hardewig then had an assist to Helgason who hit another 3 and pushed the lead to 47-36. Down the stretch, Schauer got another layup and hit a pair of free throws as O'Toole hit 2 of his own. The Spartans escape West Clermont with a 53-40 victory.
