Posted on: January 18, 2023

Turpin raced out to an early lead on the visiting McNick Rockets and never looked back as the Spatans pulled away with late free throws to defeat arch rival McNick 61-48.  Seniors Clark Helgason and Brady Hardewig scored the first 4 Spartan points as both got steals and coast to coast lay-ups early on.  Senior Nate Hayas whipped a baseline pass to Hardewig for a corner 3 and a 7-4 Spartan lead.  Helgason found Sophomore Shea O’Tool for a wing 3 point basket and a 10-6 Turpin lead.  McNick stayed in a zone and Hardewig made them pay with back to back deep 3 pointers as Turpin led 16-10 at the end of quarter number one.

The Rockets opened the 2nd quarter with a basket however Turpin responded with 4 straight points as Hayas hit a sweet bank shot runner and Hardewig hit a baseline pull up jumper to bump the Spartan up to 20-12.  Helgason got another steal and score followed by a strong drive to the basket by senior Dylan Linton as Turpin pushed the lead to double digits at 24-14.  Hardewig then hit a fade away jumper just before half as Turpin led 26-19 at the intermission.

Hardewig picked up right where he left off in the 2nd half with a drive and a conventional 3 point play.  Helgason fed O’Tool for another 3 pointer and O’Tool returned the favor with a screen and roll assist to Brad Schauer as Turpin enjoyed its largest lead 34-21.  After some free throws from Hardewig, Hayas drilled a 3 pointer just before the end of the 3rd quarter as Turpin continued to lead 40-28 heading into the final quarter.

O’Tool and Schauer opened the 4th quarter with 2 free throws each to keep the lead at 12…44-32.  Linton fed Helgason underneath for a 2 point basket as both teams began trading points.  However an 8-0 Rocket run got the game close again at 46-42.  Hardewig ended that run with 2 free throws and an assist to Schauer for a basket and a 50-42 lead with 1:57 left to play.  Hardewig drove to the hoop and powered up a 2 point basket and put the lead back to double digits 53-43.  Taking care of the ball and free throws was all Turpin needed to do to close out the visiting Rockets as O’Tool and Schauer sank 8 free throws between them to send McNick home with a 61-48 defeat in front of a crowded Klinger Court.

The win gives the Spartans an impressive 9-2 record heading into a showdown with State ranked Elder on Tuesday at the Pit.
