Posted on: January 31, 2023

Turpin traveled to Little Miami for a weekday road game and came away with a hard fought, low scoring 42-38 win where neither team led by more than 7 points.  Senior Clark Helgason scored the Spartans first 7 points of the game with an offensive rebound stick back, a lane jumper and a 3 point basket as Turpin grabbed an early 7-5 lead.  Senior Brady Hardewig nailed a wing 3 point basket and a 10-5 lead.  Senior Nate Hayas found fellow senior Dylan Linton on a fastbreak lay up for 2.  However, the Panthers ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to trim the Spartan lead 12-10.

The 2nd quarter did not get much better than the 1st quarter as both teams struggled to score or get into any type of rhythm.  Sophomore Shea O’Toole banged down a 3 to trim the Panther lead 17-16.  Clark Helgason assisted to Hayas and Linton converted a conventional 3 point play that included a sweet left hand finish around the rim for a 21-20 lead.  However the Spartans found themselves trailing 22-21at the intermission.

Linton opened up the 2nd half with a nice spin move basket to take back the lead 23-22.  Hayas then assisted Helgason to tie the game up at 25 with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.  Linton knocked down 2 free throws followed by an Alex Meyer 3 point basket as Turpin led 30-29.  However a 4-0 Panther run to close out the quarter gave Little Miami a 33-30 lead heading into the final quarter.

O’Toole opened up the 4th quarter with a knockdown 3 pointer to tie the game at 33.  After some Spartan free throws Hardewig drove to the basket and converted a conventional 3 point play to push the Turpin lead to 39-35.  Hardewig then got a defensive steal and made two free throws with 2 seconds left to ice the game and secure the Spartans 12th win of the season 42-38.
