Turpin Varsity Beats Madeira in a 3-2 Thriller

Posted on: October 4, 2021

Turpin’s Varsity Boys Soccer hosted the Madeira Mustangs at Spartan Stadium on Saturday, October 2.  Madeira came into the game undefeated and ranked the Number 1 Division III team in Ohio.  But thanks to a determined Turpin squad, the Spartans prevailed 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair that was exciting from start to finish.

Both teams came out strong, with possession hard to come by and harder to keep.  But the Spartans struck first, when with 12 minutes off the clock sophomore Jonah Burns volleyed in out of the air a perfectly weighted cross from junior midfielder Carter Flora.  It was Burns’ second goal in as many games, and gave Turpin a 1-0 lead.  Later in the first half, Madeira leveled the score on a goal by senior Will Breit.  Not to be denied, Turpin struck back with just moments to go in the first half, when senior midfielder Noah Puttman put a perfectly placed free-kick into the top left corner of the goal to give the Spartans a 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half started as quickly as the first, as the Mustangs came out desperate to level the score in a physical affair. Eventually Madeira did tie the game 2-2 on a strike from Bridger Blackwater.  But with seven minutes to go, a Turpin free kick into the box was headed onto goal by senior Nathan Hart.  The Madeira goalie made the save, but sophomore Kyle Suter was in the right place at the right time to slot home the rebound from close range.  Suter’s goal was (like Burns’) his second goal in as many games, and it turned out to be the game-winner, as Turpin held on to its 3-2 lead for an exciting victory.

Turpin moved to 6-5-2 on the season.  Their next game is “Senior Night” at Spartan Stadium at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 7 against ECC foe Kings. The Spartan seniors will be recognized between the junior varsity and varsity games, so we hope to see you there.  Go Spartans!
