Varsity Girls Soccer v McNick

Posted on: September 2, 2021
The Turpin Girls Soccer team’s early season struggles continued on Saturday evening with a 2-1 loss to the visiting McNicholas Rockets.  Despite the setback for the Spartans (0-3-0 overall, 0-0-0 ECC), the team showed flashes of progress and promise for the remainder of the season.

For the match, the Spartan offense outshot the Rockets 12-7 and had numerous scoring opportunities.  The Turpin defense also improved their performance with 21 tackles won on the evening.  Taylor Bliss, Maggie Sirotak, Brooke Wilson and Alanna Schmelzer led the way with 2 shots each, Claire Klimkowski and Lucia Johnson each record 4 tackles and Mallory Harsha notched 5 saves in the goal.

The start of the contest was pushed back early in the week to contend with the extreme heat and humidity blanketing Cincinnati.  Still, the Spartans started the game sluggish, taking a bit of time to get into their rhythm and flow.  McNicholas capitalized on the slow start and took a 2-0 lead into the half.  Coach Mulvaney fired up his crew at halftime and they came out on the field with a frenzy in the second half.  10 minutes into the second half, Lucia Johnson found Kate Hooper on the left side of the field, playing her ahead with a pass splitting defenders.  Hooper did the rest, burying the ball in the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.  The best chance to tie the match came in the 60th minute and again invoiced Johnson.  This time Lucia struck a great corner kick from the right side and Brooke Wilson skied in the middle of the field for the header.  Wilson’s shot went just wide of the goal.  The Spartans rally fell short and at the final horn it was a 2-1 defeat for the home squad.

Our Spartans will need to regroup and recover quickly as on Tuesday night the Loveland Tigers invade Spartan Stadium.  Loveland was recently ranked #3 in SW Ohio Division 1, so the girls will look for an upset win in the conference opener.
